Bathroom Renovation Tips: Tiles, Fixtures, and Layout

A bathroom remodelling project is either an interior-designer-level success or one of your greatest regrets – there’s no in between. Despite being the smallest room in a house, a bathroom requires so many suppliers, specialists, and materials to look open, minimal, and inviting.

Feeling overwhelmed? We’ve got you covered. Here’s a closer look at five bathroom renovation tips specifically focused on getting the tiles, layout, and fixtures right:

    1. Set a Realistic Budget

Before we get into the technicalities of a bathroom renovation, set a budget. Many homeowners finalise the layout, buy the materials, and hire contractors without actually knowing how they are going to afford the project. This leads to cost overruns, financial burden, and emotional distress.

Look into different tile designs and fixtures to get an estimate. Set aside a realistic amount you can spend. Pro tip? Don’t empty your savings or take out loans. And leave room for last-minute, unexpected expenses, such as rising material costs or a contractor bailing on you at the last minute.

    1. Plan the Layout

When it comes to determining the layout of your bathroom, balancing functionality and aesthetics is key. Begin by measuring the space for an accurate floor plan. Determine potential installation places for key fixtures, such as your shower, bath, sink, toilet, and vanity.

Next, define zones. Divide your bathroom into wet areas (shower, tub, toilet) and dry areas (vanity, storage). Arrange fixtures strategically so they don’t block pathways.

Try to leave free floor space so the bathroom doesn’t feel cramped.

    1. Use Durable Flooring

Flooring is another critical part of a bathroom remodelling project. Opt for bathroom tiles that are durable and equally aesthetic.

You can find a range of tiles in various sizes, colours, and finishes. Moreover, moisture-resistant tiles are also recommended. Bathrooms experience high humidity and moisture, which is why moisture-resistant and slip-resistant tiles are must-haves.

Bathrooms are high-traffic spaces. Opt for durable materials like ceramic and porcelain so they can withstand abrasion, ensuring your bathroom’s longevity.

    1. Opt for Premium Quality Fixtures

We get it – bathroom renovation projects can drill a hole in your wallet. But cutting corners on fixtures can lead to a plethora of issues, specifically reduced lifespan.

Look at it this way: Fixtures like toilets, sinks, vanities, or bathtubs are permanent items in your bathroom. They are an investment, and installing high-quality items will ensure consistent performance and functionality. You won’t have to get them repaired or replaced every couple of months.

The best part? Premium-quality bathroom fixtures can increase the resale value of your home. It will become more appealing to potential buyers, leading to long-term profits.

    1. Think About the Aesthetics

Upgrading your bathroom doesn’t mean you have to compromise on aesthetics. Consider the overall style of your home, be it sleek minimalism, rustic charm, or traditional elegance.

That said, don’t fall for the latest trend. Not every renovation idea published in Vogue Living is worth following. Things like 3D tiles, ridged furniture, and three-light sconces look good, but are not exactly functional. Go with timeless designs and styles.
