How to Deal with Toxic Friends

Friends are supposed to make you happy, but sometimes a friend can make you feel sad, angry, or tired. This is called a toxic friendship. It’s okay to fix it or walk away. Here are 10 easy tips to deal with toxic friendships:

    1. Know How You Feel

If a friend makes you feel bad a lot—like they tease you too much or ignore you—pay attention. Your feelings tell you something’s wrong.

    2. Talk to Them

Tell your friend how you feel. Say, “When you laugh at me, I feel sad.” They might not know they’re hurting you and could change.

    3. Set Rules

Make clear lines. If they always ask for things but never help you, say, “I need us to share more.” Rules help them know what’s okay.

    4. Say No Sometimes

If they push you to do things you don’t like, it’s okay to say no. Like, “I don’t want to skip class.” Saying no keeps you safe.

    5. Spend Less Time Together

If they’re still mean, hang out with them less. Play with other friends or stay home. Less time with them can make you feel better.

    6. Find Good Friends

Look for people who are kind and fun. Good friends cheer you up and care about you. They’re like sunshine after rain.

    7. Talk to an Adult

If it’s hard to handle, tell a parent, teacher, or someone you trust. They can give you ideas or help you feel strong.

    8. Be Kind to Yourself

Don’t blame yourself if a friend is toxic. It’s not your fault. Do nice things for yourself, like reading a book or eating a treat.

    9. Let Go if Needed

If they never change and keep hurting you, it’s okay to stop being friends. Say, “I need a break,” and walk away. You deserve to be happy.

    10. Stay Strong

Ending a toxic friendship can feel sad, but it gets easier. Keep doing things you love, and soon you’ll feel free and light.

Toxic friendships are like heavy bags—you don’t have to carry them. Use these tips to feel better and find friends who make your heart happy!
